COUNSELING FOR PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT

COUNSELING FOR PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT

Individual counseling. Based on active listening, empathy, client centered approach

Counseling for personal development is a process with the ultimate goal is increase or access an optimal level of personal well-being – as defined by the beneficiary or client of the counseling.

More specifically, counseling is both a relationship between the counselor and the counselee, and a process where the counselor acts as a companion to support the client in achieving various goals identified as necessary or desirable for well-being. Development counseling is suitable for people in situations and needs such as:

  • Self-knowledge (profile and personality traits from which we identify strengths, skills, potential, interests, values, motivations, etc.). Also, this can include the identification of aspects (traits, attitudes, behaviors, patterns) that prevent the optimal functioning of the advised person in relation to his goals towards personal well-being
  • Developing a functional, optimal self-esteem (too much or too little self-esteem are the two counterproductive extremes)
  • Improving more or less functional but relevant relationships for the client (with other adults or the relationship with children)
  • Identifying solutions to important situations (for example in the transition to various stages of life, the appearance of new elements in personal / professional life that create difficulties and for which the person alone does not see a solution, assumed changes in a person’s life that come together  with self-challenges, or for career decisions)
  • The development of new skills, attitudes, behaviors necessary to face the demands of personal or professional life or while aspiring for a different life
  • Support for achieving goals, when the client feels that he needs a companion to stay motivated, not to give up and to share the experience, the lessons learned, the emotions experienced – from various stages of the process, if he feels such a need.

In counseling for personal development, we work with the person without pronounced disorders or pathologies of a psychological nature. The counseling process for personal development is oriented towards the present and the future, and we are reporting to the past is done to the extent that we look there for relevant resources to achieve the intended objective.

To explain more clearly what counseling is, it can sometimes help to understand what counseling is not:

Development counseling is not coaching. Coaching has its roots in the field of sports performance, being embraced and successfully applied lately in the field of professional performance and when a person aims to achieve a level of mastery in a certain professional area. Coaching does not have in its objectives the identification of solutions or the resolution of problems encountered by the client. While counseling supports the client in problem-solving efforts. The development in the counseling process is not aimed at achieving mastery in the field targeted by the counseling process, but the development of skills, behaviors, attitudes to the level necessary to achieve the client’s well-being.

Personal development counseling is not psychotherapy or psychological counseling. The latter have as their target group more people who present certain psychological difficulties that they want / need to solve. In psychotherapy or psychological interventions, the client is often invited to explore the past, in order to identify some deeper causes for his/ her current problems such as traumas, for example, in the intervention process. The objective of psychological intervention is often that of rehabilitation, therapy, healing.

Unlike psychological intervention / psychotherapy, which can last even years, counseling for personal development is a process of intervention of shorter duration, normally from 2-3 to 12 sessions. It can last longer just if there is a more complex situation that needs more time to get solved.
